Visiting MuseumsMuseums in France are often closed on Mondays or Tuesdays. Entry fees vary and discounts may be available for pensioners and children. Lyon City CardThe Lyon City card is a 1, 2 or 3-day pass for free public transport, free entry to some museums and their temporary exhibitions, free guided tours, free activities or discounts on some activities, and discounts in some shops. The card can be purchased online or from the Greater Lyon Tourist Office.
Museum Card (Carte Musées)The Museum Card is an annual pass allowing free entry to the six municipal museums:
The card is valid for one year from the date of purchase and can be used for entry to both permanent and temporary exhibitions. It can be purchased at any of the six participating museums.
Pass TotemThe Pass Totem is a 1, 2 or 3-day pass for entry to a number of museums and sites of historical interest in St-Etienne and the region. Discounts are also available on some activities. A Pass Oura, allowing free travel on the bus, tram and train network within the Grand St-Etienne network, is also included when purchasing the pass. The card can be purchased online.
Museums in Lyon and the Rhône ValleyThere are a great many museums and monuments in the region, here are just a few: Resistance and Deportation History Centre (Centre d'Histoire de la Résistance et la Déportation): The Centre holds several temporary exhibitions based on the occupation of France by Germany in the Second World War. The permanent exhibition provides information on the major events of the Second World War, the Resistance, and the deportation and genocide of Jewish people. The museum is housed in the former military medical school occupied by the Gestapo between 1943 and 1944.
Lyon Museum Of Fine Arts (Musée des Beaux-arts de Lyon): One of France's most valuable collections of fine art masterpieces is housed in this museum, including pieces from ancient Greece and ancient Egypt, sculptures, paintings and decorative artifacts from the Middle Ages to the present day.
Lyon Museum of Textiles and Decorative Arts (Musée des Tissus et des Arts Décoratifs de Lyon): A museum which details Lyon's silk trade and production and the 2,000 year history of the textile industry. Pieces on display include Coptic tapestries, Byzantine and Muslim fabrics, objects from ancient Egypt dating back to BC, Persian rugs and rare silks from Spain and Italy.
Sacred Art Museum (Musée d'Art Sacré de Fourvière - Musée de L'Œuvre): Museum with a collection of sculptures, silverwork, silk and commemorative works. Situated near the Cathédrale Notre Dame in Lyon. Regular temporary exhibitions are organised allowing visitors to discover other religious cultures and contemporary religious art.
Lyon Contemporary Art Museum (Musée d'Art Contemporain de Lyon): The museum houses one of Europe's largest collections of modern contemporary art with a permanent collection of over 1,100 works of art. Established in 1984, the museum presents works by living artists, largely focussing on current artistic trends, and regularly hosts temporary exhibitions highlighting today's artistic practices.
Museum of Gallo-Roman Civilisation (Musée Gallo Romain de Lyon Fourvière): Museum featuring a valuable collection of ancient Roman artifacts and remains from Lyon's historic past. The museum is situated within the UNESCO World Heritage site in the Parc Archéologique de Fourvière. Sculptures, art, coins, pottery and other items dating back to the Roman Empire are on display. Visitors also have the opportunity to see the Roman Amphitheatre and Aqueduct.
Historical Museum of Saint-Etienne (Musée du Vieux Saint-Etienne): Housed in one of the region's most beautiful castles, the museum tells the story of France's first manufacturing city through exhibitions, pictures and photos.
Museum of Modern Art Saint-Etienne (Musée d'Art Moderne): One of the largest collections of international modern and contemporary art in Europe is held in this museum. A majority of works by 20th century artists are on display, with paintings, sculptures, designs and photographs by artists such as Monet, Magnelli, Picasso, Brauner and Léger.
International Footwear Museum (Musée International de la Chaussure): The museum is situated in a former convent and features an impressive collection of footwear from around the world. The museum tells the story of footwear from ancient to modern times and includes exhibits such as mummified feet of ancient Egyptian Pharaohs to French Musketeers boots, designs by creators from the 20th and 21st centuries and tools and equipment related to the manufacture of footwear.
